FAQ's
Q. Are you a “pirate” radio station?
A. Certainly Not. Everything about the operation is 100% legal.
Q. Do you broadcast over the airwaves? Can I get your show in my car radio or my shortwave radio at home?
A. No. We do NOT broadcast the Podcast over the airwaves. The Buckeyecast Podcast is sent out via the Internet. You can get it there and listen to it directly, or you can have the latest episode automatically delivered to your computer or portable multimedia player, by ‘subscribing’ (free) to the Podcast. Then you can listen to us anywhere!
Q. Then what about the Amateur Radio Station? How does that fit in to the whole scheme of things?
A. W8LV is an amateur radio station. W8LV serves the public good as a “point-to-point” radio service. Amateur radio stations do not broadcast to the general public. As a matter-of-fact, it is illegal to use an amateur radio station for broadcasting purposes in the United States. W8LV is simply colocated here with the Buckeyecast and is a completely seperate service. Both serve the public, just in different ways.
Q. Are you like one of those FM radio stations that I am forced to listen to when I drive to work in the morning?
A. We hope not. Amen.
Q. Does your Podcast contain any explicit content that needs a Parental Advisory Caveat?
A. That depends on what YOU think is explicit and what is not. If you are a parent, you should be checking ALL media that your child will be exposed to. The Buckeyecast is no different. This is YOUR JOB and not mine, as I am too busy screening content for my own children!
Q. You are giving me the runaround. Could I play this content for my children?
A. Gee, I don’t know about YOUR children, but I could certainly play this content for MY children.
Q. Do you GURANTEE that at all times this content will not be what my peers and I define as   “explicit content”?
A. NO, I simply can't GURANTEE that 100% of the time. Certainly our purpose is not to create explicit content intentionally, however, something COULD slip through editing. If that is a problem for you in an imperfect world, go away now.
Q. But you could use the Podcast to distribute explicit content, right?
A. Sure we could! But the larger question is, why would we? We are pretty sure when it comes to content that you can only cross that ‘fine line’ so may times, after that, it is going to be pretty boring to do so. If you are looking specifically for explicit content entertainment, you might as well move on. But again, YOU will have to decide just where that ‘fine line’ is. And for those that are into that sort of thing, goody-goody for you. That is certainly your right.
Q. But what standard do you actually USE for your content?
A. Well, as a general rule of thumb, we like to think of us as guests in your home, and that you have invited us into your home. We are honored that you did invite us, and hope that our conduct is to your liking. If not, you certainly have the right to ask us to leave by virtue of the power that you hold to immediately turn us off and never listen to us again.
Q. What about your misguided Political and religious beliefs? I don’t want anyone in my family hearing your religious political viewpoint!
A. You sound like a real barrel of laughs. Leave now, and go               , so WE can have a laugh. We emanate from a democracy, in spite of you. AND we do the Hokey- Pokey AND we turn ourselves around! So there!
HERE
Q. Why have you gone to all the effort of building the station, not to mention the money and work involved?
A. Well, we once heard the old saying that “Freedom of the Press belongs to those who own one”, so we thought it would be interesting to build one of our own. And so we did.   We love radio, and the medium of sound in general. We think that radio is the greatest invention in communications, ever. We are certain that radio does a much better job of entertaining and informing than television does. Unfortunately, radio has become a dreadful wasteland of automated toxic waste. Very many stations in the US are held by very few corporate entities, and we feel that this is downright dangerous. And the story is even worse for music on a worldwide basis. We hope to fill this void with creative content!
Q. Why don’t you play MY favorite bands on the Podcast?
A. Well, if you mean by that the 'mainstream' bands that you hear on the radio, it is because a few corporate entities (such as BMI and ASCAP, for example) license the rights to those songs. We feel that they exploit listener and artist alike and we simply do not have the funds available to purchase the rights. We feel that their licensing is burdensome and unclear and places us at a tremendous legal risk even if we acquire the licenses. There is also burdensome record keeping requirements. Could you imagine if the content of every painter’s easel in the world was placed in the hands of a total of only about half a dozen corporations? Well, that is pretty much the current situation, as far as music goes.
We play music that is freely released under the Creative Commons agreement, and the number of musicians that are recording under Creative Commons is increasing by leaps and bounds every day. You may have never heard any of these musicians before, but we think that you are going to like them! And you can support them by purchasing THEIR music which is available via their respective individual websites if you like what you hear! With Creative Commons, EVERYBODY WINS, and we're betting that you will have NEW favourite bands real soon! So There!
Q. What format of music do you play?
A. Because we don’t have to answer to a program director and we don’t have to stick to a play list, we don’t have a particular format. So long as it is music released licensed under the Creative Commons agreement, and therefore considered 'podcast safe' from a legal sense, we play whatever type of music we want to, and talk about anything that we want to. Isn’t it wonderful?
Q. So what music DO you play then if a handful of corporations have all the rights to the majority of songs tied up?
A. We play music licensed under the “Creative Commons” license system. This is a relatively new concept for both artist and listener, and it greatly benefits both. While in a FAQ I can't give you a legal interpretation of the Creatative Commons license, the bottom line is that it allows us to play what is commonly called “Podcast Safe” music.
Q. Are you “anti-corporate”?
A. No, and we would actually be considered pretty darned “conservative” at that, but we are defiantly anti-monopoly and think that it is a dangerous practice in a democracy to allow a few people own the majority of newspapers, radio, and television stations.   It is also completely irrelevant whether we agree with their political views or not. We DO question the government's authority in a democracy to regulate broadcast programming CONTENT, but we do NOT question the government's authority to regulate the airwaves (for example: engineering practices and standards, bandwidths, power, etc.) and we certainly DO NOT question the government authority to issue licenses. One CAN question AND respect authority in a democracy. (Isn't democracy WONDERFUL? I can't figure out what I like the most, the religious freedom, the Greenbacks, or BOTH !)
Q. How far can W8LV send a signal?
A. Amateur radio stations such as W8LV routinely communicate with other amateur radio stations on a worldwide basis. Our 'latest' logbook entries show recent communications with stations in Sweden, Hungary, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, the U.K., and the Isle of Man.
Q.I'd like to purchase music from a particular artist that I heard on your podcast. Can I purchase that directly from you?
A. No. The Buckeyecast is not a commercial enterprise at this time. You can purchase music from most musicians via their respective web site links or even directly from them, and you are certainly encouraged to do so!
Q. Why has the site and content not been recently updated?
A. There could be lots of reasons for this. Some are technical, like problems with our feed. Everything will be rosy and peachy if you merely be a bit...........patient. If we could hire a roomful of chimpanzees to randomly type html code, we COULD get things straightened out a bit sooner.
